Why is it that the celebration of freedom in the liberal tradition often goes hand in hand with the assimilation of waged workers to instruments of work and the theorisation of despotism and even of slavery in the colonial populations? Losurdo investigates the contradictions and shadowy areas neglected by researchers, proposing an anti-history that highlights the difficulties of conciliating the theoretical defence of individual freedoms with the realities of political and social relations.
