The Culture of Italians
The state of health of the Italian culture does not prefigure easy remedies. “What is lacking is a public policy for a satisfactory secondary and university education, for a system of lifelong learning, for libraries and the promotion of reading. Giorgio Napolitano said he trusted in the vital spirit of Italians. I would like to see him vindicated, but for that these vital spirits must include those with the intelligence to understand the chronic inadequacy of politics and the ability to select and give expression to a ruling class that is equal to our problems.”
Tullio De Mauro analyzes a half century of life in Italy, redefines the meaning of culture, describes the transformations of research, teaching, information and the very notion of knowledge.
