“One of the most eminent historians of Renaissance art describes the unique days of Rome in the time of Paul III, Michelangelo, Giulia Farnese, and before the lethal advent of the Counter Reformation.” Massimiliano Panarari, Il Venerdì di Repubblica

”A gripping and passionate account that does not bow to cultural acquiescence – and speaks also of the present. The restorer and scholar narrates how, in the mid-sixteenth century, the aspiration towards a Christianity less avid for power as was that cruel and perverse religion of the popes was ultimately defeated. A careful and emotional fresco to remind us of how we must never take our freedom for granted.” Stefano Maliani, L’Unità

”A vivid historical reconstruction told in vivacious prose, which attunes the secret of creativity to even troubled and miserable existences. Forcellino restores to life the artists, writers, noble women and popular voices of 1545.” Giuseppe Amoroso, Corriere della Sera
