“The United States became the greatest imperial power in history with the conviction of having been chosen by God to redeem humanity. Now that Bush’s era is drawing to a close, Emilio Gentile is certain of one thing: republican or democrat, the new American president will continue to officiate the traditional cult of the nation, by safeguarding global ‘well being’. Gentile, historian of the various forms of modern nationalism, steps into the flow of present history with a rigorous and balanced pen.” Alessandro Casellato “God’s Democracy is a detailed survey in which Emilio Gentile puts the finely honed tools of political commentator and historian to excellent use.” Antonio Calabrò “There is no book in any language that is better suited to understanding the role of religion in US politics. A tour de force!” Mark Silk, Trinity College, Hartford (CT)
